An "enlightened approach" to providing for the long-term care of Maryborough's heritage assets has received a high commendation in the National Trust of Queensland Heritage Awards.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council and heritage consultants, Converge Heritage + Community, were jointly recognised for their work to conserve Maryborough's cultural heritage at last week's National Trust of Queensland Heritage Awards.

  • City Hall,
  • School of Arts,
  • Bond Store,
  • Customs House and Residence,
  • Heritage Centre,
  • Maryborough War Memorial,
  • naval guns (Queen's Park) and
  • the Maryborough Cemetery.

Proactive approach to heritage management on the Fraser Coast

"We congratulate Council for their involvement and support for the preparation of the conservation management plans and the collection of artefacts from Queen's Park," Simon Gall, Director of Converge Heritage + Community, said. Simon Gall praised the initiative of the Fraser Coast Regional Council to undertake the project, calling it "forward planning in the truest sense of the term."

"We are proud of our ability to provide practical plans and recommendations to assist Council and the community in conserving the region's rich heritage. We believe this emphasis leads to cost-effective work that actually leads to a sustainable outcome, ensuring our heritage remains intact for a long time to come."

Importantly, the projects were undertaken by staff from the Fraser Coast office of Converge, ensuring that the work remained local.

The National Trust Heritage Awards have been held annually for more than 30 years and recognise exceptional cultural heritage projects undertaken throughout Queensland.
